But I'm not photogenic.

One of the most common things I hear before a session is this:

“I’m just not photogenic.”

And every time, I want to gently push back on that idea.

Because being photogenic isn’t some magical trait that only a few people were born with. It’s not reserved for models, influencers, or people who “just know what to do.”

Being photogenic is a vibe. An energy. And honestly? A little preparation.

After photographing entrepreneurs, business owners, and creatives across Cincinnati, I’ve learned that the people who look the most confident on camera usually aren’t the ones who walked in feeling like pros. They’re the ones who came prepared.

confidence comes from preparation

When you show up to a brand session prepared, everything changes.

You’re not wondering where to stand. You’re not stressing about what to do with your hands. You’re not second guessing your outfit.

Instead, you can actually relax.

Preparation looks like things like:

• Choosing outfits that align with your brand

• Selecting a location that fits your business and personality

• Planning props or details that tell the story of what you do

• Knowing the purpose behind the photos you’re taking

This is exactly why I spend time planning with my clients before a shoot. Strategy calls, idea boards, and conversations about your goals aren’t just “extra steps.”

They’re the reason your photos end up feeling natural and confident.

You Don’t Hate Photos. You Just Haven’t Had the Right Experience Yet.

If you’ve had photos taken before that made you feel stiff, awkward, or overly posed, it makes sense that you’d walk into the next session thinking you’re “not photogenic.”

But most of the time, the issue isn’t you. It’s the lack of planning, guidance, and direction during the shoot. When a session is intentional and collaborative, your photos start to reflect who you actually are. And that’s when people start saying things like:

“Wait… I actually love these.”

Ready for Brand Photos That Actually Feel Like You?

If your business is growing, your website is evolving, or you’re simply ready for photos that match the level you’re operating at, a brand session might be the next step.

And no, you don’t have to be “photogenic” to book one.

You just need the right photographer guiding you through the process.
